11/24/2010 - Day 3 underway

0600 (N28*51.09 W115*44.79): What a beautiful sunrise! I didn't bother taking a picture because sunrise and sunset shots are almost always disappointing. Same as when you try to take a picture of humongous seas. They always come out looking much less impressive than they really were. Right now, our closest land would be Isla Cedros, about 37 nautical miles (nm) away. We're 49 nm from the upper end of Bahia Sebastian Vizcaino and 80 nm from the Bahia's eastern shore. I guess we succeeded in getting away from land. It'll be interesting to compare notes with Byron and Jessica on s/v Sterling when we next cross paths. They left Ensenada a few hours after we did but they stayed closer in to shore and had planned a couple of stops along the way. I'm curious how their conditions were.

About 0930 I started the engine up in neutral just to charge the batteries, not for propulsion. The winds had lightened a little so I unrolled the jib. And, although it may be wishful thinking, the seas might be a little calmer today. Took about 4 hours to bring the batteries back up to "full enough".

It's nice and sunny and definitely warmer than yesterday. But, by 1500 (N28*09.25' W115*43.30') the seas started building again and we had another rough rockin' rollin' night with lots of unexplained noises as stuff shifted here and there in response to the rolls and pitches.

So it goes.

Oh yeah, we also started doing 2-1/2-hour watches tonight. The idea is that the off-watch gets 2 hours to sleep and is then woken up. She then has 1/2 hour to get herself together, make a cup of coffee or tea and, if she wants, a snack, and then is ready to relieve the standing watch at the end of the 2-1/2 hours. I'll let you know how it works out.

It's like finding a great book that I misplaced part way through. Then you gave away the ending (the safe in Los Frailes thing). Can't wait for the missing chapters tomorrow. You guys rock:)

Might have to wait a couple more days, Rod. The next entry contains about 6 photos and the rather slow (but very welcome) wifi connection we found here in Los Frailes kind of seems to choke on about the 3rd photo upload. So, probably won't get the rest of the trip uploaded until we reach La Paz unless we happen to drift by a TelCel tower on the way.

Sorry about giving the ending away although I suspect you already knew it.

DISCLAIMER: the preceding is not to be interpreted as meaning that we WILL be in La Paz or that I WILL post anything in "a couple more days". We'll be wherever we are when we get there and I'll post updates whenever I can. :-)
