10/31/2010 - The view from here

This is the view from our "back porch":

If we were to crane our necks to starboard, this is what we'd see:

And, if we then did a 180 and looked to port, we'd get to see this:

This last picture is, of course, The Casino, which I'm told, is not really a casino as we know it and never has been. In this case "Casino" refers to a gathering place of some kind. We haven't taken the tour yet. The museum portion is closed for renovation until February and the other tours are something like $15 apiece. Can't imagine that they have $30 worth of stuff to show us in there. Haven't ruled it out completely, but I'm leaning towards skipping the tour.

Wow, the scenery is beautiful. Maybe if Mexico is too expensive or not nice you could settle in the Catalina Area. Not too shabby. Love, Mom

Hold up, Ma. Isn't that sort of like saying "If it turns out that Fresno is too expensive maybe you could settle down in Willow Glen."? If Mexico is too expensive for us, there is NO WAY we could afford to settle in Catalina. The price we're paying for moorage right now is only available in the winter. We pay for 2 days and get 5 more free. In the summer, there are NO free days unless you drop an anchor somewhere.

I guess I was thinking backwards. I know it is more expensive to live in California. That is why more go to Mexico on retirement. Sorry about that. Love, Mom

Catalina, especially Avalon, holds a special place in our hearts. We were married, in the harbor, on a friend's sailboat, close to the Casino on Oct. 10, 1981. We've spent loads of time on the island, as we lived on our first sailboat in Long Beach for 3 yrs., thus sailing the 26 miles across the sea many Friday evenings after work. Love it. Also spent time last year on Southern Cross during the 'cheap' mooring dates. Missed out on the gorgeous island this year. Darn. Thanks for sharing your nice photos and your great stories of our wedding location.
