3/18/2011 - Cockpit speakers

Been trying to come up with some kind of speakers for out in the cockpit. Something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg (so Bose weatherproof speakers are out) but still sounds pretty good. Speakers have big herkin' magnets in them so a permanent installation anywhere near the compass was out. I've seen very nice installations under the dodger as well as mounted under the boom gallows. But, for one reason or another, none of these really appealed to me. Mostly it was probably because the weather-proof speakers they used are expensive and probably unobtainable in La Paz. I finally came up with a dirt-simple solution.

I bought a pair of 4-way, 250 watt car stereo speakers for the equivalent of about $20 US in one of the many stores in La Paz that carry such things. I cut a couple of holes in a spare lower drop board and mounted the speakers. Ran some wires to a stereo plug near the companionway. Now, when we want music in the cockpit, we just drop the board in place and plug them in. And, since they are pretty much a match for the speakers down below, I didn't have to make a bunch of adjustment to the fader on the stereo to keep one or the other set of speakers from being too loud.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville.....

Yep, we did the same thing over a year ago. We bought a pair of $25 Kentwood speakers from the auto store and they still sound great! Love the way you mounted the speakers. We cut a hole on either side of the cockpit and installed the speakers. Nothing like music in the cockpit!

Boy, life looks great. Enjoying being home again and sewing on my spiffy Baby Lock machine now that it is fixed so that it is almost like new. Two baby quilts done and now onto a king size wedding quilt. Enjoy your sunshine. I am sure that Dad is envying you. We have spots of sun but mostly rain, which I am enjoying. Love, Mom

kinda funny how you are laying back listening to music and then if one scrolls down... the very next picture you see is of lulu working. In fact .... one has to scroll WAY down to find a picture of you working...!

That's because I always have the camera. Yeah, that's it. Can't hardly take a photo of myself working, can I? And besides, the shutter speed is too slow to actually capture my movements when I'm working. On the few photos you see of me working, I had to actually stop long enough for Lulu to snap a picture. Otherwise, I'm just a blur. Just can't get all my work done if I have to keep stopping to pose for pictures.

-Steve (stopped working just long enough to protect myself from this slanderous attack. Love to chat but gotta get back to work.)

You are such a McGyver! Very clever way to solve a problem without spending big bucks.
