5/25/2010 - Facebook

Dear Friends,

Facebook, MySpace, Spacebook, MyFace, SpaceFace, Mybook, whatever....

I confess, I just don't get the social networking thing. I signed up for a Facebook account quite awhile ago. At the time it was for some specific purpose like getting access to a class reunion mailing list or something. Mostly I never visit my Facebook page because a.) I forget I have one, and b.) I usually can't remember which password I used. On the rare occasion that I do visit the site, I find it filled with stuff that I had no part in. Stuff about what other people are doing. Shouldn't that stuff be on their pages instead of mine?

I manage to stay in touch with everyone that I want to via e-mail and through comments on this blog, and by phone and even by actual face-to-face conversations. I guess I just don't need any more contact than that. So, I'm going to cancel my Facebook page, assuming that's something that the cybergods allow.

If you've asked to be My Friend (which is, in itself, kind of weird) and I haven't answered yet, it's not because I don't like you. I really do. Like you, that is. Whoever you are. I'm just choosing to back away from this particular aspect of the digitally connected world. Don't even talk to me about Twitter or Tweeting. As far as I'm concerned those are still just something that birds do.

Digitally yours,

-Steve

hey steve, is that a knife block built onto the wall... or just there for protection????

Yep, it's a knife block. The knife is kind of on the small side for protection. But if I have to suddenly cut a line loose and don't have my knife strapped on (shame on me!) I know that there's a sharp little booger right inside the companionway, in easy reach without going below.

Hi Steve,
FYI, even if you deactivate your facebook account, all your stuff is still there. Any pictures or personal information. I recommend reactivating your account, delete everything, then save your changes and deactivate it again.
Sincerely,
Jennifer

Uh oh. You know you are a old fart when technology leaves you in the dust. I also cannot get around all this stuff. Just annoys me. Much like when the housemouse and I are out and a hot 20 year old babe strolls by. When young you think "All right!". Now I just think she would annoy me too much. Ouch, I'm a old fart! Ken

I'm a huge Facebook fan and here's why:

After 30 years, I reconnected with someone I liked back in high school through FB and we are now living together and plan to buy a W28 this year (hence, my interest in your blog.)

I am getting ready to do some freelance work for someone I knew only at parties a few years ago. She posted on FB that she was looking for a graphic designer and I responded ... I am hoping this is the start of a business that will allow me to work from home, or in my case from anywhere in the world on my boat.

FB has been very good to me. It's a great communication tool and often times humorous, but I agree with you - some people post way too much about themselves. In that case, I just hide them.

Tweeting, though. I just don't get.

Jennifer,
Thanks for the tip.

Leslie,
I don't doubt that FB works for lots of folks. After all, there are about a jillion people using it daily. Just wasn't of much use to me. That and, Lulu might frown on me reconnecting with someone I liked back in high school.
