The wooden piece will be down in the water when in use. There's a "sail" that sits on top and then keeps the boat on a course based on wind direction. As long as the wind direction remains pretty steady, you keep going the right way. It's similar to an autopilot (which we also have) except that it requires no electricity and is less likely to suffer an unfixable breakdown.<br /><br />Thanks for the compliment, F-I. We much prefer the green to the brown paint too. Especially when you see the green right next to the teak caprails.
